Description

With his superlative modeling technique and intuitive realism, Epstein was one of the finest portrait sculptors of his generation. He preferred ethnically diverse models, choosing Asian, African, or Indian sitters. One of his favorites was the statuesque Kashmiri woman, Sunita (Amina Peerbhoy), who appears in his work from 1925–31. Through observation and empathy Epstein distilled Sunita's personality, from her natural reserve to a brooding sensuality.
