Description

Kelly freely manipulates media and imagery to produce a rich mix of gesture (seen in the Japanese characters drawn on the lanterns), texture (the scraped areas of the paper defining the ribs of the lanterns), tradition (the subject of Japanese lanterns), and abstraction (the unusually oversized scale and cropping of the lantern forms).
