Description

Noted for his nocturnal photographs of violent street scenes, here Weegee turns his attention to a touching scene of urban life: a woman mopping the floor in the foyer of a large office building. In this unusual composition for him, the photographer captured a solitary figure who is dramatically lit in the upper-left corner of the narrow, vertical image, which is almost entirely enveloped in darkness. With his direct, spontaneous style, Weegee clearly rendered his subject matter, as always capturing its expressive qualities.
