Description

Active in the avant-garde Dada and Surrealist movements, Man Ray was a painter and photographer who became known for his experimental photography, especially with cameraless images and solarization. While living in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, and working as a portrait and fashion photographer, he was actively involved with collaborative projects with Surrealist painters and poets, providing images for their books and articles. In this finely crafted studio portrait, he captured the bright, alert, and convivial personality of his friend, the Surrealist painter Yves Tanguy (1900-1955). Tanguy was one of the most successful at meticulously rendering an invented geography-whether desert, marine, or lunar-populated by amorphous objects or creatures.
