Description

Beginning in the early 1960s, Moriyama challenged accepted Japanese photographic conventions with his unique vision of jarring juxtapositions and strange associations culled from the chaotic, often bleak environments of Tokyo and Osaka-the cities in which he has lived. He photographed at unpredictable angles, often at very close range, and printed his negatives using a grainy, high-contrast technique. This rare vintage print is an outstanding example from his important series Tokyo, the City of Webs. With seemingly arbitrary abandon, he selected a portion of a simple display rack of eyeglasses and sunglasses-ordinary consumer products made extraordinary by the vision of the artist.
