Description

Like her teacher Blanche Lazzell, Hewit was fascinated with the possibilities inherent in the labor-intensive method of hand-printing white-line woodcuts. Both of them experimented and varied the hues for every impression so that each is unique. As Hewit explained, "The artist in block printing is responsible for every line and effect and so very quaint and personal things happen." In this impression, the rainbow of graduated colors arranged in stripes describes the river, the colors ranging from dark blue in the foreground to pale green in the background, creating the illusion of receding space. In the other impression, however, the stripes serve a more decorative function.
