Did You Know?

Hoppé described Russian ballerina Tamara Karsavina as “intellectually head and shoulders above any of the other ballerinas” he had photographed.

Description

Renowned for her beauty as well as her dancing, Tamara Karsavina (1885–1978) starred with the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes, where she created many famous roles including the Firebird. Settling in London, she became a founder of modern British ballet. In this ballet, the Firebird is captured in the forest by a prince. To gain her freedom, she gives one of her golden feathers.
