Did You Know?

John Knudsen embraced the imperfections inherent to woodcut and felt that they ultimately contributed to the prints that resulted.

Description

John Knudsen was a lifelong printmaker who was based near Chicago and trained in the influential workshop of engraver Stanley William Hayter. Over the second half of the 20th century, he explored a wide range of techniques, including woodcut, the process used to make this print. In its rough facture and timeless composition—drawn from the artist’s travels to rural Michigan—the work reveals Knudsen’s interest in folk and untrained artists and German Expressionist prints.
