In the CMA exhibition Picturing Motherhood Now, artists Andrea Chung, Alison Saar, and Rose B. Simpson offer new images of motherhood, using the subject as a lens through which to examine history and contemporary issues.
Join Chung, Saar, and Simpson in conversation as they discuss their distinct approaches to figurative representation, their innovative uses of sculptural materials, the social impact of art, and the different meanings of motherhood they present in their work.
Andrea Chung (b. 1978, Newark, New Jersey) lives and works in San Diego. Her multimedia art practice focuses on matrilineal cultural legacies in Jamaica and in Trinidad and Tobago and critically engages with the subjects of colonialism and slavery in the Caribbean.
Alison Saar (b. 1956, Los Angeles) works in sculpture, mixed media, and installation. Drawing in part on African, Caribbean, and Latin American folk art and spirituality, her art explores vulnerabilities experienced by mothers and daughters of color throughout history and endows these subjects with strength. She is the daughter of artist Betye Saar.
Rose B. Simpson (b. 1983, Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico) is part of a long lineage of Pueblo women artists working in the ceramic tradition. Through her large-scale, figurative sculptures and mixed media, she challenges stereotypes surrounding Native arts.
