Fall Session Eight-week classes, Sep–Nov. Special workshops are offered on select Wednesdays and Saturdays, and new four-week mini-sessions are now available. Join practicing artists in our studios to play with ideas and materials while developing skills and techniques. All skill levels welcome.

TUESDAYS

Still-Life Painting (all levels) Eight Tue/Oct 1–Nov 19, 10:00–12:00. Using oil or acrylic, learn the fundamentals of painting, from organizing a palette and blending, color mixing, brushwork, and glazing techniques to the elements and principles of design and composition. A partial supply kit is available for $80. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $240, CMA members $210.

Creative Drawing (all levels) Eight Tue/Oct 1–Nov 19, 1:30–3:30. With an emphasis on creative thinking, this class helps you practice close observation and attention to detail while exploring drawing techniques and concepts such as value, shading, and line. // Instructor: David Verba. $240, CMA members $210.


WEDNESDAYS

Workshop Wednesday: Conté Pastel Drawing (all levels) Wed/Sep 11, 6:00–8:30. Compare European and Asian art techniques in the galleries and interpret Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, using colored conté pastel on sanded paper, and mimic rhythmic Asian brushwork, using graphite. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $50, CMA members $40. 

Drawing in the Galleries (all levels) Eight Wed/Oct 2–Nov 20, 10:00–12:00. Hone observation and technical skills as you use charcoal, graphite, and conté crayons to sketch artworks in the galleries. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $245, CMA members $215; includes model fee for one session.

Workshop Wednesday: Watercolor Discovery (all levels) Wed/Nov 6, 6:00–8:30. Play with watercolor and learn about this unique, transparent medium. Experiment with color mixing, watercolor washes, and the way in which paint and water work together to create interesting effects and textures. Have fun creating a watercolor techniques sampler. Instructor: Nancy Notarianni. $50, CMA members $40.

Workshop Wednesday: Exploring Natural Pigments and Dyes (all levels) Wed/Nov 13, 6:00–8:30. Investigate the CMA’s textile collection through an examination of pigments and dyes. Learn traditional hand-painting and block-printing techniques. Instructor: Maggie Latham. $50, CMA members $40.

Workshop Wednesday: Feel the Pose! Gesture Drawing & Yoga (all levels) Wed/Dec 11, 6:00–8:30. Use the human form as inspiration for relaxed gesture-drawing exercises to hone your observation skills in a unique way—through the study of yoga poses. Instructor: Susan Grey Bé. $50, CMA members $40.

FRIDAYS

Friday-Night Mini: Creatively Drawing the Collection (all levels) Four Fri/Sep 6–27, 6:00–8:00. Use the collection as a starting point for personal and expressive abstract interpretations, while learning technical drawing techniques. Instructor: David Verba. $140, CMA members $120.

Composition in Oil (all levels) Eight Fri/Oct 4–Nov 22, 10:00–12:00. Experiment with line, color, balance, pattern, and contrast to create both still lifes and figurative compositions in this traditional painting course. Advanced painters are encouraged to further develop ideas and techniques and to experiment with paint application. A partial supply kit is available for $80. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $240, CMA members $210.

All-Day Workshop: Medieval Monsters and Creative Drawing (all levels) Sat/Sep 28, 10:00–4:00. Explore the terrors, aliens, and wonders of Medieval Monsters as a creative springboard for expressive and abstract reinterpretation in your own drawings. $100, CMA members $85.

Four-Week Mini: Creative Digital Photography (all levels) Four Sat/Oct 5–26, 1:30–3:30. Explore the art of photography by learning the fundamentals of your camera and digital image-manipulation techniques. From smartphones to DSLRs, all cameras are welcome. Instructor: Ben Hauser. $140, CMA members $120.

All-Day Workshop: Ikebana Flower Arranging (all skill levels) Sat/Dec 7, 10:00–4:00. Create modern abstract floral designs by using traditional Japanese principles of flower arranging. This art emphasizes shape, line, and form. Supply list provided in advance. Instructor: Isa Ranganathan. $100, CMA members $85.
