Embroidered Miter

Embroidered Miter

1700s
Location: not on view

Description

Only the pope bestowed miters on cardinals and bishops. This spectacular miter glistens with brilliant gilt-metal thread, enriching the symmetrical decoration on an allover silver-metal thread ground, embroidered in brick stitch. The splendid long lappets evolved from secular headgear that tied under the chin.
