Description
Ryan preferred to print her woodcuts on black paper that she, ever thrifty, repurposed from wrappers for sensitized photographic material. The artist unfolded and ironed these tissue-like sheets to create burnished surfaces that did not absorb the oil paints she used as printing ink. As a result, the colors tended to retain their rich, unadulterated hues.- Cutting Edge: Modern Prints from Atelier 17. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (organizer) (April 9-August 13, 2017).Against the Grain: Woodcuts from the Collection. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (organizer) (August 17-November 9, 2003).
