Description

Munakata successfully synthesized Eastern and Western ideas. Like European artists, cutting the block was a significant act of creation for him, but influenced by traditional Japanese ink painting, he printed only in black. Munakata added color by applying watercolor to the back of the woodcut, printed on a thin sheet of transparent paper. Unlike the large uniform editions produced by the publishers who controlled the printmaking process in the past, each of Munakata’s impressions is unique.
