Description

Munakata was a prolific printmaker who studied with the famous master Un'ichi Hiratsuka (whose work is also on view in this exhibition). Munakata attracted widespread recognition by winning awards in major international print shows in 1952, 1955, and 1956. In 1960 the Cleveland Museum of Art organized an exhibition of Munakata's work that later traveled to Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Munakata received the Order of Culture, Japan's highest honor in the arts, in 1970. For the rest of his life he maintained a preeminent position as the best-known modern Japanese printmaker both at home and abroad.
